What is security? How would you define it? What is important about security?
If we look at the definition of security, according to Merriam-Webster, it is, “the state of being protected or safe from harm.” Another explanation from the famous dictionary includes, “things done to make people or places safe.”
There are other aspects to this idea of security. What about financial security? How do you feel about your job? Do you have enough in savings? Are you comfortable regarding your career? Did you choose the right major in college? Has your career field done well? Or is it in decline?
For many in America today, these questions may be hard to answer. Per marketwatch.com, almost two-thirds of all Americans have less than $1000 in savings. A grimmer statistic is that 21 percent don’t even have an open savings account.
These numbers point to a very bleak picture for most Americans. How did they get into this situation? What have they been doing with their money? Why have they chosen to spend it all and not save?
There are many reasons we should be saving. If you are thinking about getting married and having kids, you should have some idea about buying a house. That requires a savings plan for the down payment. Those kids you are thinking about having will require education beyond high school. Both trade schools and college require a lot of money to attend.
If you would like to go on a vacation every now and then, this is something else that will take money, which of course, means you have to save. There are also medical expenses that always pop up, which may require extra money. In order to use that extra money, you must save it first.
And then, of course, there is saving for your old age. This is something that you cannot appreciate right now because you are in your late teens or early twenties. Besides, it costs so much money to live today that there is nothing remaining for saving.
There are as many excuses for not saving as there are reasons for saving. Having savings means possessing security. It is a good feeling.
When we talk about security, just what is the meaning of that word? There are many reasons people might feel insecure. If you are not making enough money, you probably don’t feel secure. If you don’t know if you are going to have enough money to buy groceries, you will feel insecure. If there is a possibility the company you are working for is about to go out of business, you probably don’t have a warm and fuzzy feeling about the future.
So how do you fix it?
Find your own way. Start your own business. Make your own money. Plant and cultivate a money tree. Become secure in the knowledge that you can do anything you want to make the money you need.
And then you need to pay attention to Rule No. 5 as much as possible.
